Sunday Services

Service at Faith in the local churchOne of the best ways to get a feel for what goes on at St John’s is to come to one of our Sunday Services. We meet together twice on Sundays (at 10.30am and 6pm). Although slightly different in style and format, both services focus on learning more about the God of the Bible, His Son Jesus Christ and what His word has to say about Himself and our lives in relation to Him. Both meetings involve music, prayer and the reading and teaching of the Bible (usually, both services have the same sermon). Whoever you are - whether you’re already following Jesus or just wanting to find out more - you’ll be very welcome at either Sunday Service, and you won’t be pressurised to sing, pray or say anything you don’t believe.

10.30am Morning Service

FamiliesThis service is slightly more traditional and open to all. It is especially popular with families, since for most of the year we run a programme of Bible-centred activities for children from 3-14 years old, and a crèche for under 3s. There is also an opportunity to talk and get to know each other better over pastries and hot drinks before the service, and further refreshments afterwards. The service lasts about an hour, and children’s clubs finish at noon. To find out more about the various children’s clubs, click here.

6pm Evening Service

This service is slightly less formal, with no separate children’s activities. It’s a service that appeals to a broad range of ages and people, including teenagers, postgraduates, young professionals, internationals and the retired. Our evening begins with a light supper, followed by a time to sing, pray and hear from the Bible. We then serve drinks and cakes, and people often stay around to catch up and get to know each other better. Supper and service usually finish about 7.30pm.

Midweek Fellowship Groups

Bible studyFor those who know Christ and express a desire to attend regularly, our midweek small groups are a vital part of church life at St John’s. Smaller groups of church members meet to pray together, encourage each other, share concerns and discuss the previous Sunday’s talk, and to apply God’s word to their lives. This is the best way of getting to know peoplein the fellowship, since it’s hard to form strong friendships on the basis of Sunday Services alone. We have groups for men only, for women only, and for men and women together - as well as various groups for children (for midweek children’s activities, click here. Some groups meet at the church building, and others in nearby homes. Most happen on weekday evenings, though some take place during the daytime. There’s also a central group which meets in the church undercroft on Wednesday MWFevenings, initially for a meal and then dividing into smaller groups to look through the talk from the week before and to pray together. This year we’re looking at different genres from the Old Testament and seeing how they all point to Jesus. This is normally the best group for newcomers to join. Do contact the church office for more details of any of these groups, or ask on a Sunday.

Faith in the Local Church annual conference

Faith in the Local Church CDs 2Every June, we put on a conference to address a topic which will be helpful to St John’s and other fellowships as local churches. Several churches contribute to the planning of this each year. The aims of the conference are: to build confidence in the local church (a God-given tool for a God-given task); to strengthen competence in the ministries of our local churches (sharpening one another up in the exercise of God-given gifts); to express fellowship between churches and across denominations (fostering a collaborative spirit). In recent years, we’ve looked at such topics as joy and love. 2010's title was Faith in the Local Church... for Living as God’s Household, and took place in June. To download the latest FILC brochure please click here, or visit the official website. To book your place for the next conference, please contact the church office.

What Christians Believe

Although we try to make our Sunday services as accessible as possible, you may still have lots of questions which you don’t feel are answered or you don’t feel you can ask. As its name suggests, What Christians Believe is an opportunity many have found helpful to explore the heart of the Christian faith. It is a short foundations course run over four Wednesday evenings which looks at some WCBkey questions and the Bible’s answers to them. Although there is plenty of opportunity for asking questions and discussion, there is no obligation to read aloud or pray. All are welcome from those entirely new to the Christian faith to those who would welcome a refresher course.

The topics are:
Week 1: What is God like?
Week 2: Who is Jesus?
Week 3: What’s gone wrong with the world?
Week 4: How can I know God?

The sessions start at 8pm (7.45pm for coffee and cake). There is a short talk followed by a chance to discuss what has been said. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal and sessions will finish by 9.30pm. Please contact the church office if you are interested in joining the next course in November.
