Our team
We strongly believe in an every member ministry here at St John’s (see Ephesians 4:12). So in that sense, every member of the church is on the team! But please find below some pictures and profiles of those who have a more formal role and whom you might want to look out for on a Sunday...

Gloria Cheung

Gloria was born and raised in California, where she came to know Jesus after her first year of university. She ended up on this side of the Atlantic to pursue further education, and stayed on to work in the charity sector for a few years. She recently joined the staff at St John’s as a jack-of-all-trades. She oversees the church and building administration, helps to coordinate the women’s and children’s ministries, and makes a fine cup of tea. Contact her if you have a typewriter you’d like to donate to her collection.

Jonathan Gould

Jonathan has been the minister of St John’s since 1995. He is married to Beth, and they have four children: George, Toby, Abigail and Amelie. Before ordination, Jonathan was a solicitor with a City law firm. His formal training for ministry was in Oxford, and he then served for four years as an assistant minister in the diocese of Sydney, New South Wales. On his return to the UK he was involved for five years in a youth and children’s work run by The Titus Trust. He collects the latest kit needed for enjoying mountain biking, tennis, golf, sailing and skiing - and very occasionally uses it.

Mark Smith

Mark was born and raised in Northamptonshire, before studying history at university and then spending a couple of years working with school Christian Unions. He was blessed with believing parents who taught him the good news about Jesus, and grew lots in his knowledge of and love for Jesus through Christian camps and his time at university. Mark joined St John’s in 2008 and is involved in a range of things including music, Bible studies with individuals and groups, children’s ministry, and preaching. He’s recently finished two years studying at the Cornhill Training Course. Mark is married to the lovely Ruth. He enjoys playing and watching any sport with a ball, the West Wing, a pint with a friend, and reading. He’s never read Harry Potter. And he never will.

Edward Peck

Edward joins us from the West Midlands. He likes to think of himself as a southerner – a claim backed up by his accent and education – but he really loves the north of England having spent three years at university in Newcastle. He plays lots of sport and will be seen most Sundays with a bruise or two having spent Saturday afternoon playing rugby for Hampstead. Edward gave his life to the Lord Jesus in his final year at school and has moved to London to study at the Cornhill training course so that he can better teach and explain the gospel to others. He is doing lots of work with children and the Anchored youth group. He tries to be healthy with his diet in a bid to boost his sporting appearance but loves a good cup of Earl Grey and a big slice of cake.

Roger Ong

Roger joined the staff at St John’s Church in 2011 from Vancouver, Canada where he spent the last four years pursuing his theological studies. Originally from Singapore, he first attended St John’s with his family when he was based in London in 2000 with his previous company. Roger is a first-generation Christian having accepted Christ as his Lord and Saviour when he was twelve. Married to Corrina, they have three children, Maegan, Shaina and Timothy. Prior to Vancouver, Roger studied economics at a university in Tokyo, Japan, and worked in the Singapore Civil Service, an equity research firm and a land transport company. He enjoys reading, taking walks on the heath with Autumn their dog, playing tennis and trying to catch up with his kids on the ski slopes. Roger has recently become a fan of the Vancouver Canucks and found a new definition for disappointment - the Canucks finally making it to the Stanley Cup Finals after 17 years and losing the 7th game in a best-of-seven series.
